Watercolor Demonstration: Reflections in Water

I am currently teaching a class in Landscape Watercolor; this quarter is specifically about water, and last week I began a demonstration on reflections in water.  I continue to be inspired by the Robert Berlind painting I saw in February at the National Academy Museum in New York.

In this earlier stage of the painting you can see the masking fluid which I applied after I allowed the first pale wash to dry. To suggest the delicate lines of the reflections extending beyond the larger darker areas, I depended upon the fluid line you can achieve with the use of a rigger brush.

The North Cascades Institute's Environmental Learning Center is a five minute walk from dramatic views like this one that I painted last year as mists rose up from the waters of Diablo Lake. I love the  view of towering Pyramid Peak, demonstrating for all to see just where the power comes for the electricity we use in Seattle!

North Cascade Institute's   Jenny Cloutier assisted me near Rainy Pass in the North Cascades National Park. Here she studies a lupine closely.                                                                                      Lunch breaks are great times to check in with other students to see what they've come up with during our plein air sessions in the morning and the afternoon.

These colors have not been Photoshopped!  Where do you find blues and greens of this hue? Maybe out of a paint tube, but nowhere else besides the national parks! 

The photo to the left was taken by one of my students, Jack Oates, at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park when we painted there in September 2008 at a class I taught for the Yellowstone Institute: The Pleasure of Plein Air Painting.  Below I am working with a group of students on Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park during a class I taught for the North Cascades Institute: At Water's Edge: Landscape Watercolor in the North Cascades.  Read more about my classes this year at Yellowstone and the North Cascades.
