The 2014 Nature's Peace calendar, which pairs quotations from John Muir's writings with my watercolors, published by Pomegranate Communications, is now available in Seattle at the University of Washington bookstore (and also online through Pomegranate). I am always so honored that my work is in any way connected with Muir--his writing is so beautiful and heart-felt. This year, as always, some of my favorite wild places are featured in the calendar. The cover represents a scene that I saw in Yosemite National Park in a grove of giant trees which also included some Pacific dogwoods and a Douglas fir. In California the dogwoods stay dry enough that you can enjoy their intense autumn hues. We have them up in the Pacific Northwest, too, but the soggy rains of fall tend to muddy up the gorgeous colors! At North Cascades National Park, I have enjoyed them in spring, both in earliest bloom and also fully blown. They line the shores of Diablo Lake, near the North Cascades Institute's Environmental Learning Center.
