Green-winged Teal Courting

Sunshine encourages the waterfowl to think of spring and courtship even on a cold winter day. At the wetlands at Magnuson Park, waterfowl were noisily calling to each other. I saw some remarkable behavior I hadn’t ever noticed before: a male rising up out of the water and extending his head feathers into a kind of trailing crown to catch the sun’s rays.
